River of Life

In an irrational manner, the politicians of California raced to save the delta smelt; a three inch fish, causing a domino effect of immense proportions. The species does have some struggle in that it is on the endangered list, however, there are habitats available for its growth and maturity. Unfortunately, the measures to save the smelt were so extreme that it caused a man-made drought in water flow. Environmentalists have known for at least 15 years, so too have fire departments and officials of water supplies, that the diversion of water would lead to their inability to tackle even the smallest of flames.

Sadly, wildfires broke out in the Los Angeles area swallowing up an entire region of houses, businesses, and land. The fire was so hot that it melted cars; metal dripping on the chard earth, took out buildings in minutes, and wiped out concrete and asphalt streets. Governor Gavin Newsom said he was distraught at the lack of working fire hydrants and other necessary water supplies that were unavailable when needed. The wreckage and cost is overwhelming and the delta smelt have not fared any better. It was too high a price for the wrong item.

The cost of our decisions are so often undetermined, or not fully considered until it is too late. We try to save something, which seems important, while discarding the great danger. The Bible is filled with these scenarios. Life is too full of people who gave up so much to keep so little. Looking back we can see the disproportionate cost, but too late, the matter is over and the deed is done.

Prov 14:12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. All the ways of man lead to hurt. Only the path of Jesus Christ, devotion, consecration, and worship is secure. Ambition and money have paved the road toward heartache. Half-hearted church life leads to a disjointed existence. Most children won’t rise above their examples of an uncommitted lifestyle.

I write in hopes to keep the river of life flowing in your life. Let worship be your constant pursuit. Let the Word be your daily strength. Put aside things that keep you from a lifestyle of holiness and godliness. The investment in the church always gives greater return than any material venture.

And finally, seek first the Kingdom. The other things will come, but never trade the insignificant and put your home and family in danger. The old preacher once said, “There is a fire a comin’ that will not be quenched.” I say, “Keep the Holy Spirit alive and active. It is the salvation of the Lord.”
