He Will Sustain

Isa 43:2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you: when you walk through the fire, you shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon you.

It seems improbable that after all Israel had done; their abandonment and disobedience of God’s law that He would still send out His enduring promise to His people. The prophets so often spoke of the judgment of God. They were commissioned to guide the people to correct them, even to condemn them. However, God did not leave the prophet’s voice without compassion. There were moments of renewed promises and covenant. God desired a people called by His Name. He sought for them throughout the ages and He brought them to Him. Eventually, and with divine destiny, He came in the form of a man and bought them with His own blood.

The love of God for us is beyond our comprehension. It reaches deeper than the oceans; spans the breadth of time; rises higher than the midnight sky. His holy will is for all to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth. Isaiah wrote of God’s enduring promise. Regardless of the raging waters, the rivers, or the fire, God’s promise will sustain us. There are no elements in the earth or physical circumstance that can overtake us. The arms of the Lord are wrapped around His people.

Jeremiah, that weeping prophet, filled with lament and sorrow for the nation of Israel, was not empty of hope. It was Jeremiah who wrote of the Lord’s mercies and grace.

Lam 3:22 It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

Lam 3:23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

Lam 3:24 The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.

This is more than a reminder. It transcends all other hopes and dreams, troubles and triumphs: Our God is faithful. His faithfulness is not based on our abilities. His mercies are not contingent on our goodness or accomplishments. He is a faithful God. Full of grace and mercy. His promises are yes and amen! O Love of God, how rich and pure. How measureless and strong! It shall forevermore endure – the saints’ and angels song.
